Multiwall Polycarbonate Sheets: Ranchi's Insulated Roofing Choice

When heat build-up matters more than anything else - over a car porch, a shop front, or a factory bay in Ranchi's peak summer - multiwall (twin-wall or triple-wall) polycarbonate sheeting is the material Kushal Kraft recommends first.

Multiwall sheets are built from two or more flat layers joined by internal vertical ribs, forming a series of air-filled channels running the length of the sheet - much like corrugated cardboard, but in optically clear or tinted polymer. That trapped air layer is what sets multiwall apart from every other roofing sheet on the market: it is a genuine thermal insulator, not just a sun shade.

How the Hollow Structure Works in Your Favour

Twin-Wall (6-10mm)

The economical starting point - two flat sheet layers with a single row of ribs. Good insulation and light weight, suited to residential car porches, small verandahs, and shop canopies.

Triple-Wall (16-25mm)

Three flat layers and two rows of internal ribs for greater rigidity and materially better heat and sound insulation - ideal for larger spans, factory sheds, and terraces used as living space.

Structured X & W Profiles

Diagonal or W-shaped internal ribbing for extra load-bearing strength in high-wind or heavy-span situations, common on industrial shed roofing.

Multiwall vs Solid: The Core Trade-off

Multiwall and solid polycarbonate are both polycarbonate, but they behave very differently on a roof. Multiwall's air channels give it superior thermal insulation - typically cutting radiant heat transfer far more than an equivalent-cost solid sheet - and it is significantly lighter per square metre, which matters when you're roofing a large courtyard or shed and want to minimise frame cost. What you trade for that insulation is a small amount of impact resistance and long-span rigidity, which is where solid sheets take over; we cover that comparison in full on our solid polycarbonate sheets page.

In practice, for most Ranchi homes and shops looking to cover a car porch, balcony, staircase skylight strip, or shop canopy, multiwall is the more cost-effective and comfortable choice because it keeps the space noticeably cooler underneath during April-June, when rooftop surface temperatures in the city regularly climb past what bare tin or solid glazing can comfortably handle.

Multiwall sheets also flex more easily than solid sheets, which our fabrication team uses to advantage on curved or arched roofing designs - a common request for entrance canopies and verandah roofs where a flat sheet would look plain.

Who Uses Multiwall Roofing in Ranchi

We fit multiwall sheeting for bungalow owners covering open car porches in Kanke and Harmu, for shop owners wanting a bright but cool canopy on Main Road, for schools roofing open corridors and assembly areas, and for small factories and warehouses in Namkum needing economical, insulated shed roofing over large floor areas without the weight penalty of solid sheet or the heat penalty of tin.

Why Choose Kushal Kraft for Multiwall Roofing

  • We stock genuine co-extruded, UV-coated multiwall sheets from established manufacturers
  • Correct thickness recommendation based on span and load, not just the cheapest option
  • In-house fabrication - frame and sheet installed by the same accountable team
  • Proper end-cap and profile sealing so channels don't collect dust or moisture

Our Installation Timeline

Day 1: Site Assessment

Span, orientation, and existing frame condition are checked; sheet thickness and profile are finalised.

Day 1-2: Frame Fabrication

Steel or aluminium purlins are cut, fitted and fixed at spacing suited to the chosen sheet's rigidity.

Day 2-3: Sheet Cutting & Fixing

Sheets are cut with the internal channels running along the slope (never across it, so water drains out and doesn't pool inside the cells), then fixed with thermal-movement clearance.

Day 3: Sealing & End Capping

Breathable tape is applied at the top end and solid tape at the bottom to stop dust and insects entering the channels while allowing condensation to drain.

Day 3-4: Inspection & Handover

Water test, visual check for gaps, and a short walkthrough on cleaning and care.

Frequently Asked Questions

Multiwall has hollow internal air channels that give it better heat insulation and lighter weight, while solid sheet is a single dense layer offering higher impact resistance and rigidity over long spans.

Not if installed correctly. We seal the top end with breathable tape and the bottom with solid tape, which keeps dust and insects out while letting any condensation drain away.

For a typical residential car porch spanning up to about 3 metres, an 8mm or 10mm twin-wall sheet is usually sufficient. Larger spans or high-wind areas may need 16mm triple-wall.

Yes, multiwall sheets can be cold-bent to a curve along their channel direction, which we use for arched entrance canopies and verandah roofs.

While exact figures vary with thickness and ventilation, customers consistently report a noticeably cooler feel under multiwall roofing compared to bare tin sheeting during peak summer afternoons.
